Bringing a women-centered and culturally informed approach to fetal alcohol syndrome prevention targeting Northern Saskatchewan First Nations women

Abstract

The research objectives of this project, 1) reconceptualize FAS prevention as a women-centered activity grounded in women's experience; 2) develop FAS prevention approaches that emerge out of the lived experience, knowledge and wisdom of First Nations women and that are informed by a scientific evidence base as well as the empirical knowledge of service providers; and 3) create a FAS prevention framework that identifies prevention strategies that are transferrable across First Nations communities while simultaneously being sensitive and responsive to cultural and community difference.  The project is designed to emphasize a particular knowledge base in each research module that can contribute to FAS prevention strategies that seek long-term improvements to maternal health and wellbeing and reduction of risk to fetal health and improvement of birth outcomes.
