Dr. Diane Martz is a new investigator in the area of rural women’s health. She joined SPHERU in May 2006. Dr. Martz has worked to bridge social and natural sciences through such innovative projects as the Frenchman River Biodiversity project, which brought scientists and community members together to study physical, biological and community capacity aspects of the Frenchman River Basin in southern Saskatchewan. Her research and teaching interests include environment and water issues, sustainable rural communities, health and the human dimensions of agriculture.   Her current research focuses on rural youth, risk behaviours and healthy lifestyles; the impact of BSE on the Farm Family and changing rural governance structures.

Diane also brings to SPHERU extensive experience in working in large research teams, along with a research focus on the social, economic and cultural dimensions of rural health. She has established partnerships with many Saskatchewan and Alberta rural communities.

Research areas of interest include:

  • the social, economic and environmental sustainability of rural communities
  • models of rural childcare
  • meeting the needs of survivors of domestic violence
  • the role of gender in community capacity
  • rural women’s work and the impacts of changes in Canadian agriculture
  • ethical considerations in research with rural and aboriginal communities
